Ballistic nanofriction.

Sliding parts in nanosystems such as nanoelectromechanical systems and nanomotors increasingly involve large speeds, and rotations as well as translations of the moving surfaces; yet, the physics of high-speed nanoscale friction is so far unexplored. Here, by simulating the motion of drifting and of kicked Au clusters on graphite--a workhorse system of experimental relevance--we demonstrate and...

Nanofriction behavior of cluster-assembled carbon films.

We have characterized the frictional properties of nanostructured carbon films grown by supersonic cluster beam deposition via an atomic force-friction force microscope (AFM-FFM). The experimental data are discussed on the basis of a modified Amonton's law for friction, stating a linear dependence of friction on load plus an adhesive offset accounting for a finite friction force in the limit of...

Interaction imaging with amplitude-dependence force spectroscopy.

Knowledge of surface forces is the key to understanding a large number of processes in fields ranging from physics to material science and biology. The most common method to study surfaces is dynamic atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dynamic AFM has been enormously successful in imaging surface topography, even to atomic resolution, but the force between the AFM tip and the surface remains unknown...

Amplitude spectroscopy of two coupled qubits

We study the effect of a time-dependent driving field with a high amplitude on a system composed of two coupled qubits (two-level systems). Using the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) makes it possible to find simple conditions for resonant excitation of the four-level system. We find that the resonance conditions include the coupling strength between the qubits. Numerical simulations confirm t...

Nanoindentation and nanofriction on DLC films

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been studied for many years as wear-resistant and low friction materials. Their tribological behaviour depends on the nature of the coating, which is determined by the deposition process. It is also strongly affected by environmental conditions. In this study, the nanomechanical properties and the nanofriction behaviour of two aC:H coatings deposited on s...
